The historic house and the garden:
Built between the 17th and the 18th century to host high prelates who were on
their way to pilgrimages at the nearby Sanctuary of Loreto. Many coats-of-arms adorn the
walls in both the courtyard and on the main staircase, which are a memento of the
prelate's stay in the house.
In the mid 19th century, the present owner's great-great-grandfather, Domenico, who lived
in Vienna, moved with his family to Recanati, where he bought the house that, from then
on, has borne his family name.Though respecting its ancient beauty and structure, the
house has been thoroughly refurbished in the recent years, in accordance with a modern way
of living and the E.U. regulations. The ceilings of the main living-room were painted at
the middle of the 19th century with mythological and grotesque frescos.
The large cellars date back to the 16th and 17th century and have maintained
their original structure with decorative bricks and barrel and domical vaults. Until
recently, they were used to stock cereals and to produce oil and wine. The long grottos,
which were used in the past as a means of escape towards nearby houses and more recently
to stock wine, were dug in the Middle Age.
The Italian style garden, surrounded by brick walls that are a part of the ancient city
walls, reflects the period in which the house was built. It looks westward towards the
"Colle dell'infinito", (The Infinite hill), described by the poet Leopardi and
the Apennine mountains beyond the Marche valleys. Its flower-beds are surrounded by hedges
of century-old boxwood.
