Planning Your Paris Food Experience

Posted: January, 10 2019

When planning your trip to Paris, it’s just as important to map out your food adventure as it is to choose your hotel and coordinate visits to museums and historical sites. After all, a big part of the experience of traveling is trying the local food, right?

There are always new restaurants and food trends to explore in the City of Lights. This selection of restaurants features updated classics and culinary surprises that are inspired by award-winning chefs and talented pastry chefs.

6 Paris Restaurants to Explore on Your Trip

1. Cravan: This pint-sized café is packed with history and character—and it’s always busy.
Historic architectural details from Cravan’s past are lovingly preserved. What’s new? Specialty coffees and evening cocktails. During the day, guests savor croque madame or sautéed girolle mushrooms. In the evening, they sip cocktails as the sun sets. Cravan is located at 17 rue Jean de la Fontaine Paris 16.

2. Holybelly 5 is the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast or a leisurely lunch.
Using fresh seasonal produce and cheeses, they create dishes that are authentic and delightful. Holybelly 5 offers exceptional cakes, biscuits and tarts. Welcome a new day with their signature pancakes with maple syrup or bacon and eggs. Holybelly 5 is located at 5 rue Lucien Sampaix 75010 Paris.

3. Hélène Darroze is a Michelin-starred chef who opened Jòia in the autumn of 2018.
Featuring cozy tables, a bar and an English-style salon on the second floor, it offers shareable dishes inspired by Darroze’s travels. The wine list highlights women vintners, while the menu presents plates like beef short rib, fresh mushrooms with foie gras and egg yolk confit. Find Jòia at 39 rue des Jeuneurs Paris 2.

4. Classic and quaint, La Poule au Pot is located at 9 Rue Vauvilliers, 75001 Paris.
When Michelin-starred Chef Jean-Francois Piège refreshed the storied La Poule au Pot in Les Halles, he kept some things the same—like its 1950s quaintness and its simple, family-style dishes. Along with frogs legs en persillade and onion soup, La Poule au Pot is also known for its bouillon-poached chicken dish with vegetables. The perfect comfort food for when the weather turns nippy.

5. Pierre Hermé at Beaupassage is the perfect space to savor the moment.
Pastry Chef Pierre Hermé’s tea salon serves coffee and tons of pastries, as well as classic sandwiches and salads. Let yourself sink into the luxurious banquettes. Pierre Hermé is located at 53-57 rue de Grenelle 75007 Paris. Enjoy.

6. Looking for a menu that changes with the seasons?
You’ll find it at this relaxed, updated French bistro with exposed brick. Restaurant Eels features dishes like Sicilian shrimp with vegetables and or tuna carpaccio with tomato marmalade. Discover Restaurant Eels at 27 Rue d'Hauteville 75010 Paris.

Avoid a vacation nightmare! Book your apartment, villa or hotel through Small & Elegant Hotels Intl!

Posted: July, 11 2017

Independent vacation rentals owned by ordinary people looking to rent out a spare bedroom or entire apartment/property have been a growing trend in the past few years thanks to online bookers like airbnb. While this certainly provides more options for the consumer, it isn’t without its risks. This is why booking through a trusted source is extremely important!

Misleading photos, locations in dangerous neighborhoods, dirty/unsafe spaces, poor maintenance or poor service from the host or hostess—these are just a few of the many reasons you increase your chances of disappointment when you book a non-traditional vacation rental from a source that doesn't have the capacity to vet the properties nor build a personal rapport with them.

While there are these inherent risks in renting an apartment, home or even a hotel, there are also ways to avoid them. When you book an accomodation through Small & Elegant Hotels International, you are booking with a trusted source!

We vet all of our properties and we’ve personally visited many of them to see and experience for ourselves. We know if the apartment in Paris is really within a reasonable walking distance to the attractions on your must-visit list. We know if the villa in Tuscany can comfortably sleep all 10 of your guests in your multi-generational family vacation. We know that the flat or hotel in London is in a safe neighborhood.

We are unlike other booking sources where just about anyone off the street can list their apartment or hotel rooms for rent. When you book with us WE HAVE YOUR BACK! If for some reason an issue does arise due to unforeseen cirmcumstances we work have a rapport with our properteis & work directly with them to get the issue resolved as quickly as possible.

Booking vacation rentals outside the big chain hotels is a great option for many travelers and when you book through Small & Elegant Hotels you can rest easy knowing you won't be stumbling into a vacation rental nightmare!

Boutique Hotel:  Maybe!

Posted: February, 22 2016

Sometimes the best solution for your travel accommodations is not the boutique hotel route.  Let’s face it, these days grandparents, matriarchs and patriarchs, extended families and others are all enjoying the benefits of #bucketlisttravel.  While Europe has done a great job in the area of family room accommodation with quads and suites in many hotels, we think the better solution in most cases is renting an apartment.
Apartments provide significant benefits to a family traveling together.  First, economically, it is often more reasonable to secure a two or three bedroom apartment in Paris, London or Rome than it is to book two or three hotel rooms.  Add the efficiency of the capacity to cook meals and the comfort and closeness of a common living room area and the appeal of an apartment option becomes obvious.
There are two types of apartment options available to the #bucketlisttraveler: the private apartment and the serviced apartment.  A serviced apartment is common in Europe and typically provides many of the amenities of a hotel.  Front desk, concierge, food service, etc. are many of the amenities in a serviced apartment.  American travelers love the fact that someone is available at the front desk to assist with tours, tickets and restaurant recommendations.  It is also nice to be able to pop downstairs and grab some extra towels or a bar of soap.  The other benefit of a serviced apartment is the flexible stay policy.  Many do not require a fixed number of nights, just like a hotel.  And, of course, their location is also key, often times in the middle of the sightseeing action.
A private apartment, however, gives a traveling family a real submersion opportunity.  The best part of boutique travel is as we say, “putting you at the scene of authenticity.”  You live like a true local.  Private apartments, usually available for stays of a least three nights, do just that.  They are in residential neighborhoods, so you shop, live and sleep like local.  The challenge always is the question of how do I know it’s a nice apartment.  Consolidators rarely inspect apartments so you really never know what you are going to get.  Rent an apartment from a resource who knows the area, has local management that can assist you with any questions or issues you have with the apartment…see note about towels above…and has a local meet and greet you at the apartment to show you the ropes.  This is the best formula for a great boutique experience.
Either way, explore the benefits of an apartment next time you travel.  Not just for the value, but for the opportunity to spend more time together in the moment, away from technology, in some of the most historic and beautiful places in the world.

Learn more about the 5 villages of Cinque Terre

Posted: April, 16 2015

Cinque Terre is a part of Italy we've been working hard to add to our portfolio and in the past month, we've added several amazing hotels and B&Bs from this lovely region. If you've never heard of Cinque Terre, it is made up of five seaside villages perched in the steep hills of the coastline in Italy. These five villages are historical and retain much of their original old world charm, so much so that you may find yourself feeling as though you've stepped back in time. Today on the blog, we're going to dig a little deeper into the villages of Cinque Terre and as a result, you'll hopefully see why we are so excited to be sharing this region with our loyal customers. Click here to see all of our hotel and B&B options in Cinque Terre.

Vernazza

Vernazza is perched on a natural seaside pier with an amphitheater shape, which creates a gorgeous view and makes the village perhaps the most picturesque of Cinque Terre. Because of its beauty, this village is also the most-visited by tourists and the main shopping areas are often bustling with visitors. It also has the most easily accessible port in Cinque Terre, which makes it very easy to reach by sea. Perched on the edge of a cliff at the tip of the town, sits the Doria Castle. This ancient castle sits on the hilltop above Vernazza and was originally constructed as a watch tower during the 15th century and is now visited often by tourists. From the hilltop of Doria Castle, you can get a good view of Vernazza's natural and protected harbor that includes a small beach and calm turquoise waters. After a full day of shopping, sunbathing and sightseeing, tourists have no shortage of amazing dining options in Vernazza. Perhaps one of its most highly regarded restaurants is Belforte, which offers delicious Italian cuisine and seafood, as well as breathtaking views of the coastline.

Monterosso

The Cinque Terre village of Monterosso dates all the way back to 643 AD, when people settled on the hills to escape the barbarian invasions. The village is best characterized by its medieval village center called Monterosso Vecchio and its modern residential district, which spreads along the beach of Fegina. Monterosso has the highest number of tourist accommodations in Cinque Terre and is also recognized for having the best beaches out of all five villages. It also has the most wine shops, artisan shops, hotels and restaurants. Some of the best views can be found at the Church of the Capuchin Fathers. From here, visitors can enjoy wonderful panoramic views of the village.

Corniglia

From the railway, Corniglia can be reached through a long flight of steps that lead into the village. Unlike the other villages of Cinque Terre that are recognized as maritime villages, Corniglia is classified as a rural village. It is situated on a 100 meter high promontory above the sea and is surrounded on three internal sides by terraced vineyards. At one point, the sea was only reachable by a long stair of 370 steps called the Lardarina. Today, there is also a road that runs a little above the beach. Corniglia has been around since the 13th century and has ancient Roman origins. It is believed that the name stems from an old farm where white wine was produced. Must-see attractions include the Church of San Pietro, a significant monument in the gothic-ligurian style and the Belvedere, a seaside terrace that offers amazing views. When in Cornigila, get a scoop of authentic Italian gelato at Alberto Gelateria. It makes for an indulgent treat, especially after a long hike up the stairs that lead into the village or from the beach!

Manarola

Established in the 13th century, Manarola is a village surrounded by vines and very famous for its wine. A well-known walk called the "Via dell'Amore" starts in Manarola. It is an easy walk, about 2 kilometers long that connects Manarola to another village of Cinque Terre called Riomaggiore. The homes in Manarola descent right down the cliffs, nearly into the sea, perched precariously on the wave-beaten rocks. This village is especially magical during the holiday season when the village sets up manger scene with more than 300 life-size statues placed amongst the terraced vineyards overlooking the village. The entire manger scene covers more than 4000 square meters. If visiting during other times of the year, there is still plenty to see and do. For example, many tourists visit the church of San Lorenzo, built in 1338 to see the church's beautiful rose-colored window that dates back to the 14th century. Like all of the villages in Cinque Terre, Manarola too has no shortage of fine dining. Trattoria Dal Billy is among its most well-reviewed establishments and features a delicious menu full of authentic Mediterranean cuisine.

Riomaggiore

At first glance, the buildings in Riomaggiore almost look as though they are stacked directly on top of one another, but that's just because of how steep the cliffs are in this seaside Cinque Terre village. If you are traveling from La Spezia, Riomaggiore will be the first Cinque Terre village you'll meet. It is also the village located on the other end of the "Via dell'Amore" that begins in Manarola. The village itself is so steep that many of the streets are simply sets of stairs or steps. The village's main street has a stream that runs directly below and the street itself is a popular stop for tourists as it is full of shops, restaurants and bars. After working up a hunger from all the steps, a visit to Veciu Muin will likely be in order. This local pizza shop serves up authentic Italian pizza pies, salads and cheap, yet delicious wine.

5 top reasons to visit the 5 lands of the Cinque Terre – come explore with us!

Posted: April, 08 2015

Situated on a rugged portion of coast in the Italian Riveria, Cinque Terre, Italy is a breathtaking area comprised of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. These villages, along with surrounding hills and coastline, are a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Five top reasons to visit our Small & Elegant Hotels in the Cinque Terre.

1.) The Variety
Unlike other areas in Italy, where you often have to weather a lengthy means of transportation to get to the next place you want to visit, in Cinque Terre, each town is just a hike or a brief train ride away. Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea, and every town you come upon is its own little world.

2.) The History
There is a lot of rich history to observe in each of the five towns. Because it's a World Heritage site, you'll be hard pressed to find another setting that is as traditionally kept as Cinque Terre. Each town has its own unique history. And, the fact that the towns were built on cliffs by the water's edge means you won't be seeing any cars or motorcycles here — just plenty of pedestrians taking in the beautiful views.

3.) The Hiking
If you have been traveling for a while or are feeling a little weary, there's a train that can take you from town to town very quickly. But if you're up for an adventure, you simply must enjoy some of the hiking trails with one of a kind views.

4.) The Food
It's no surprise that a group of Italian towns has great food, and it’s a guarantee that biting into a fresh, ripe peach or savoring your favorite flavor of homemade gelato, after hours of touring, is a real treat. Gazing out at the sunset over the water brings your mind and body to rest and relaxation. Because the towns are set in a prime growing region, the wine, olive oil and many other foods, such as lemons and pine nuts, are grown just moments away from where you're eating.

5.) The People
In cities like Rome or Milan, it might not always be easy to find a helping hand when you're lost or seeking advice, but in Cinque Terre, that isn't the case. Those who are visiting are eager to make friends, and those who live there are happy to ensure your trip goes as smoothly as possible.

Our favorite European destinations for the seasoned traveler

Posted: February, 02 2015

Early is the best time to start planning your European adventure this summer, so we thought we’d take the time to tell you a little bit about our favorite destinations to help you get the travel planning ball rolling. While we could focus on the tried-and-true destinations like Rome, Paris or London, for this particular post we’ve decided we’d like to focus on our favorite less-known destinations that are perfect for the traveler who has already hit up all of the major marquee cities they’ve wanted to experience in Europe.

Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg is part of France’s legendary Alsace region that is best known for its rolling hills of endless grape vineyards that produce some of the world’s best wine. Strasbourg is the largest city in the region and provides for a great launching point for exploring all that Alsace has to offer. The region is speckled with many tiny wine towns that will make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. All of the locals in this region are extremely welcoming. On our own recent trip to the region, a local creperie owner in the village of Riquewhir lent us his own personal map to borrow for the day as we explored some of the neighboring villages. Wine is of course the focus of this region and you can definitely get a whole week’s worth of adventure visiting the many towns and wineries and taking strolls through the vineyards, but this area is also home to some other great sightseeing like Haut-Koenigsbourgh Castle. This castle perched on a mountaintop is open to visitors and provides breathtaking views of the entire region. On clear days, you can even see into Germany

Italian Lake District

For those who have already explored the major cities of Italy and want to enjoy a more low-key vacation this time around, the Italian Lake District is a great way to enjoy the best in Italian culture without the hustle of the major city and the feeling of needing to see and do all of the attractions. When you come to the Italian Lake District, you come to relax and unwind just as ancient Roman writers did in the region thousands of years ago. If you enjoy celebrity sightings, this region is also a home away from home for George Clooney who owns a lake house in Como and was married there last year to his wife Amal Clooney.

Brussels, Belgium

While Brussels is a large city in every sense of the term, it is also one that is frequently overlooked as a destination for travelers. This city is the epicenter of the European Union, serving as its capitol city. Being that Brussels serves as an international center for politics, it’s also a great melting pot of European cultures and you’ll find locals there are more than just Belgians. The city is full of great architecture including buildings as old as the medieval era, as well as newer postmodern structures. While in Belgium, you’ll also find yourself in the midst of a wonderful food scene, best known for its waffles, chocolate, French fries and beers. Belgian cuisine is often recognized as some of the best food in Europe so its a perfect destination for foodies. You’ll find no shortage of local mom and pop cafes and bistros, perfect for people watching and soaking in the atmosphere.

Small & Elegant Hotels: Not your typical travel company

Posted: January, 19 2015

At Small & Elegant Hotels we like to think we aren’t your typical travel booking company.  We take pride in knowing we bring a very personal touch to an experience that nowadays is often very impersonal. The Internet is flooded with travel booking websites that try to win your hard-earned travel dollars with gimmicky special offers, promotions and packages.

At Small & Elegant Hotels, we too offer special promotions and discounts for select properties, however we take pride in our dedication to quality over quantity and this goes for all aspects of our business—we’d much rather book fewer, high quality vacations to clients who are more than 100% satisfied with their experience than book vacations to thousands upon thousands of clients, who book stays with mediocre hotels and head home from a vacation dissatisfied.

We know you work hard for your money and parting with your income to take your family or loved ones abroad should be a positive, memorable experience. Its always been and will always be our goal to help get you to where you want to go and have those memories that will last you a lifetime.

So how do we ensure our clients fly home from vacation satisfied with their experience? It’s a simple solution that takes a little extra legwork on our end, but results in better client experiences on yours.

1. Every hotel featured on our website has been personally vetted by the Small & Elegant Hotels team. Most of the hotels we offer on our website have been visited by our team so that we can experience them firsthand and rely what we learn to our clients.

2. We only work with the best hotels the world has to offer. Sure, there are plenty of big box hotels that offer super low rates, but our goal isn’t to find the lowest rates. Italians villas in Tuscany: the perfect winter retreat

Posted: January, 08 2015

Happy New Year from all of us at Small & Elegant Hotels! We hope you had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones. If you’re like us, you’ve now got your sights set on spring while enduring this week of sub-zero temperatures.

When the weather is frigid like this, one of our favorite things to do is think about taking a warm and sunny vacation or getting away to anywhere with warmer winters. We mustn’t be alone though. The winter is considered high season for the Caribbean as people from all over the world try to escape harsh winters.

While the Caribbean may be the first place you think of when you consider getting away this winter, perhaps you should also consider some other atypical locations. The winter is actually considered the low season for Italy tourism, making it a great time to explore Italy’s top destinations like Rome or Venice and temperatures this time of year are mild in the 50s and 60s. For others who don’t want to play tourist in a big city and are looking for a true escape, the Italian countryside has all you’ll need and more.

Tuscany is perhaps the most widely known rural region of Italy and with good reason. This breathtaking region in central Italy is full of rolling green hills, quaint towns, and vineyards. It is regarded as the birthplace of the Renaissance and has been home to many figures influential in the history of art and science, and contains well-known museums such as the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace. Another thing Tuscany is known for? It’s great supply of amazing vacation villas, perfect for groups of friends or families looking for a true home away from home where they can unwind, relax and spend time together while enjoying the Tuscan landscape. Private villas throughout italy typically feature amazing amenities like large eat-in kitchens, magnificant outdoor dining, oppulent gardens, relaxing swimming pools, and tennis courts all there for your private use and enjoyment.

Villa Claudia

Villa Claudia is a large, welcoming Villa set on a hillside between Florence and Siena. Just a few years ago, it was for all practical purposes an abandoned hayloft, but it has been rebuilt meticulously to a very high standard by the new owner, converting the old building into a warm and charming country home.

The interiors throughout are wonderfully furnished with modern and traditional Tuscan pieces in keeping with the original terracotta floors and beamed ceilings. The large kitchen is extremely well-equipped (including freezer, fridge with ice-dispenser, oven, dishwasher ) with a large fireplace and dining table. As in every house of rural origin, it is perhaps the main space, where the family gathered after a day of work to enjoy those typical dishes that we still find today on Tuscan tables and that, on request, can be tasted and savoured here by the guests also. The spacious, furnished loggia, outside the kitchen, includes a shaded area for outdoor al fresco meals. A beautifully maintained garden surrounds the house, ensuring complete privacy and leading down to a very large pool strategically positioned to enjoy the best view..

Villa Reigna

Villa Reigna is one of the most beautiful and elegant county villa’s in Chianti complete with a tennis court and a unique wonderfully sloping stone swimming pool. It is located between Panzano in Chianti and Greve in Chianti at the end of a 2 km. well maintained dirt road in a secluded place that enjoys a wonderful panorama of the rolling hills of Chianti, yet it is walking distance from an excellent restaurant.

The villa that dates back to the 13th Century has large and spacious rooms and a superb collection of antiques and paintings, yet it maintains a very comfortable feel, full of character, which makes it the perfect Tuscan home for a lovely holiday. Surrounded by 10 hectares of Tuscan countryside, vineyards and olive groves, Villa Reigna has its own mature gardens, trees and an antique rose garden.

The villa is large (6,000 sq.ft) and spaciously allocated on two floors with a huge fully-equipped Tuscan kitchen with dining table and doors to the terrace, a formal dining room with French doors leading out to the south facing terraces, a billiard room, a very comfortable family sitting room, a large living room, 5 double/twin bedrooms, 1 single bedroom, 5 full bathrooms and a powder room.

Villa Cortona

Villa Cortona is a charming villa located in a quiet and panoramic position in one of the most scenic areas of the hills surrounding Cortona. Thanks to a careful restoration completed in September 2011, the old country house dating back to the fifteenth century, was transformed into a beautiful private independent villa, tastefully furnished and decorated, ideal to comfortably accommodate up to 9 people. The clever use of materials, colors and fabrics gives the setting a warm and elegant feel. From the swimming pool and the beautiful garden of the villa (with a BBQ, gazebo and unique outdoor furniture) you can enjoy wonderful views of Cortona and the Chiana Valley. The Villa is the ideal place for those wishing to spend their holidays in a unique setting and looking to relax.

Highlights of Provence

Posted: December, 10 2014

Many times, after all the marquee destinations throughout Europe have been visited, admired and tasted, travelers yearn to experience parts of Europe beyond the city’s reach—meandering roads through grassy fields and orchards, quaint towns that appear frozen in time, and a way of living that is simple and quiet and beautiful.

Escaping to the rural regions of Europe is a great way to experience Europe without the buzz and hyperactivity that is often associated with visiting bigger cities like London, Paris or Rome. When you travel off the beaten path, you’ll find inviting and magical places that welcome tourists and travelers with open arms and provide an oasis for reflection, relaxation and peace. One of these rural regions is Provence in the south of France.

Lavender

When you Google Provence, you are bombarded by images of fields and fields of purple flowers. These flowers are lavender and the region is full of farms that focus on this fragrant plant that is known for its relaxing properties. You can take a tour at many of these farms and allow the scent of the lavender to wash over you or you can sit, relax and admire the blossoms from afar and catch a whiff or two of their scent as it wafts through the gentle country breeze.

Authentic small towns and cities

Provence is full of small towns and cities like Aix-en-Provence, St. Remy or Nimes that are big enough to draw tourism, but not so big that they are consumed by it. There’s still a lovely balance between authenticity and touristry that can only be achieved in towns of such a scale. You’ll find residents are very open and welcoming to visitors and excited to share their piece of paradise with you.
While the region is ideal for relaxation and reflection, there is still much to see to do if you’d rather have a more tourist-like experience.

Palace of the Popes

In the town of Avignon you can visit the Palace of the Popes. This compound is nestled high on a hill above Avignon and was once the heart of Christendom when pope Clement V moved the Papacy to Avignon in 1309. This move made Avignon among the most important cities in all of Europe for more than a century.  Today, you can tour the giant palace that has a medieval wall surrounding it and gothic-style structures that draw you back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a medieval village that was a summer hideaway for Avignon popes, but today is most known for its wine. There’s an entire museum dedicated to the history of the wine called Musee du Vin that gives a great glimpse into the history of the area and the winery and of course, the tour wouldn’t be complete without wine samples. There are many vineyards in the area that welcome visitors as well as walking and cycling tours that provide a great way to immerse yourself in the gorgeous landscapes.

French cowboys

When making plans to visit France, cowboys may not be on your itinerary, but maybe they should be. The Camargue is at the mouth of the Rhone River and is known as French cowboy country.  On an island where the Rhone divides, you’ll find these French cowboys herding bulls and riding white horses. Visitors to Camargue can go horse riding or admire the great variety of birds that call the island home—including pink flamingos.

Roman ruins

Nimes, on the border of Provence, is a Roman city with well-preserved and impressive remains. In Nimes, you can see the Les Arenes, a first-century Roman arena with two storeys of tiered seats that housed crowds of up to 20,000 who gathered to watch gladiators fight and chariots race.  Today, the arena is used for bull fighting and once-a-year Roman games in May. Nimes is also home to Maison Carree, a 5th century temple that was the model for Napoleon’s Madeleine church in Paris.  And while Nimes claim to fame is its Roman ruins, its also home to some impressive modern architecture with recent buildings like the Carree d’Art designed by British architect, Norman Foster.

Wouldn’t you rather be in Provence?

Provence is a region we receive requests for often. It's a favorite destination amongst American travelers and for good reason. Located in southern France, this historical region extends from the left bank of the lower Rhône River on the west to the Italian border on the east, and is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea on the south. Its best known for its breathtakingly beautiful natural scenery that has inspired master artists like Monet and Renoir and because of its southern location, Provence enjoys beautiful weather all year round.

Now, we are able to provide you with more choices in Provence, with three exceptional offerings located in Aix-en-Provence and Saint Remy.

Hotel des Augustins, Aix-en-Provence

The Hotel des Augustins welcomes you in the ancient Convent of the Augustins Chapel. This outstanding landmark was built in the 15th century and is now a classified historic monument. Built during the 12th Century, the Convent des Augustins was gradually transformed until the 17th century.

Located in Aix en Provence’s historical city center, only a few meters away from the famous Cours Mirabeau and Place de la Rotonde, the hotel is the ideal starting point to walk and discover Aix-en-Provence rich heritage and culture.

Hotel Sous les Figuiers, St. Remy

Setting itself apart from standard hotels, the ‘Sous les Figuiers’ radiates a very personal atmosphere that will make you feel completely at home. Christmas in Paris

Posted: November, 07 2014

Have you ever thought about spending the holidays abroad? A trip with just your immediate family in a new and exciting foreign city where you can explore the trappings of the town together during one of the most magical times of the year.

If you have considered such a trip, going to Paris for the holidays was likely on your radar. This city is breathtaking any time of year, but during the holidays, it takes on an extra layer of charm, beauty and character that will leave your jaw dropped at every turned corner.

There are also plenty of wonderful and family-friendly attractions that Paris offers during the holiday season to help get you in a festive spirit that you’ll soon start second guessing the notion that “there’s no place like home for the holidays”—whoever wrote that song, must have never been to Paris!

Below are our favorite attractions in Paris that really get us in the holiday spirit and if you’d like to see them for yourself, check out the variety of Parisian flats and apartments on our website, perfect for accommodating families. Sweeter yet, we also have a special offer at the Victoria Palace in Paris good for stays through December 30.

The Maneges de Noel: Christmas Carousels are among these temporary attractions setup for the holidays. These festive carousels can be found in nearly every Paris neighborhood during the holidays, with the largest and most popular ones at Hôtel de Ville and the Eiffel Tower.

Just like you can go see the Macy’s windows in New York City, Paris department stores too get in the holiday spirit by sprucing up their store windows with elaborate scenes of whimsy. Some stores even provide wooden stools outside the windows for little ones to get a better view of the splendor. The stores that are must-sees are Galeries Lafayette, Printemps, and Bon Marché.

Christmas Markets are common in most cities, so its no surprise that Paris has a few too. These markets are full of vendors selling a variety of homemade and kitchy holiday decor that make for perfect momentos to remember your trip.

Champs Elysees and the Eiffel Tower are top attractions in Paris anytime of year, but during the holiday season they have extra sparkle. The trees lining the Champs Elysees are dripping with holiday lights and the famous boulevard is full of high-end designer shops with lovely holiday displays. It’s also the perfect opportunity to buy a gift or two for your family at home. The Eiffel Tower is especially magical in the winter. Every night, the lights on the tower turn on and sparkle for five minutes on the hour and with a snowy Trocadéro square, the lights are just that much more beautiful. Better yet, the Eiffel Tower also sets up an ice skating rink on its first level, giving visitors a one-of-a-kind experience as they skate around the rink and enjoy stellar views of the Paris skyline.

At Printemps and Galeries Lafayette on Boulevard Haussmann, there is an elaborate light display that puts most other holiday twinkles to shame. Last year, the buildings boasted more than 150,000 lights arranged in geometric patterns resembling stained glass windows.

Small & Elegant Hotels visits The Toren

Posted: October, 01 2014

So we’re back from a whirlwind of a trip to Europe! During our stay we got to more intimately explore the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany. Today, we’d like to share with you what we experienced during our stay at The Toren. As you may already know, we partner who some wonderful hotels in Amsterdam. The Toren is a gorgeously romantic boutique hotel right on a canal and minutes from tourist destinations like the Anne Frank house, Nine Little Streets, and the legendary Red Light District. We stayed in a Junior Suite which was on the ground level and in the back of the building with floor to ceiling glass doors that open up to a patio in the hotel’s courtyard. It was a great escape from the general high activity and noise you get when out on the main streets of a big city like Amsterdam.

Our Junior Suite, and all of the suites at The Toren, feature elegant décor and bedding. The rooms are generally dark and romantic with lots of texture in the form of lush fabrics and patterns. Our suite had a spa tub with remote control settings. It was also self-cleaning so once you were done with your bath, the tub would work through a cleaning process to ready it for its next use. We also had a tiled walk in shower with an invigorating rainfall shower head in addition to a standard shower head.

The Toren provides breakfast for guests in a main level dining area that features elegant décor like chandeliers, ornate and plush furniture, and white-clothed tables with candles. Breakfast is buffet style and includes staples like eggs, bacon, sausage, cereal, yogurt, granola, croissants, doughnuts, muffins, deli meats and cheeses, juices, milk, and single serving boxes of chocolate sprinkles intended to top toast—a breakfast staple in the Netherlands we later learned! The staff is also happy to do custom food orders like omelets and prepare café drinks like cappuccinos. In the back of the dining area there’s a sleek bar that features colored lighting during the evening and night-time hours, perfect for a relaxing late-night drink while you unwind before bed. Across the hall, there’s a cigar smoking room for guests to enjoy as well.

Perhaps the greatest joy of staying in a boutique hotel like The Toren, is the personalized attention staff are able to provide. Fewer rooms mean more energy for each guest. Many of the staff remembered our names, which room we were staying in, and recalled conversations we had the day prior. They were always eager to provide advice on what to see or do while in Amsterdam or help make our stay more comfortable. We sincerely enjoyed our stay at The Toren and are glad that we are able to share this gem of a hotel with our clients.

Small & Elegant Hotels explores Amsterdam

Posted: September, 02 2014

Small & Elegant Hotels will be headed to Amsterdam later this month to check out two of our Amsterdam hotels, The Toren and Hotel Sebastian's. While we're in town, we're also going to explore some of the city's most popular tourist stops to help us become even better at educating and informing our clients on what there is to see and do while they stay at a Small & Elegant Hotel. Before our trip, we've been doing some preliminary research on the city and below are the top attractions we can't wait to check out!

The Floating Flower Market

The Floating Flower Market in Amsterdam is along the city's Singel canal and all of the flower stalls are on floating barges. The market began in 1862 and has since then developed into the most well-known flower market in Holland. While the netherlands famed tulips won't be in season during our travels, we definitely intend on picking up a pack or two of bulbs to bring back with us and plant in our home garden. We think it will be a nice way to remember the trip.

Van Gogh Museum

Famed post-impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh is Dutch, so it makes sense that there'd be a museum full of his work in Amsterdam. We're excited to see some of his most prized paintings up close and personal. While his most famous painting, Starry Night, is in NYC, we're excited to see many of his less known, but still just as impressive pieces of art, including his collection of self portraints.

Ann Frank House

Ann Frank, the Jewish diarist whose wartime writings during Holocaust became known around the world, resided in Amsterdam and her former home has been transformed into a museum that gives you a peak into Ann Frank's life and the Jewish persecution and discrimination that plagued the time period.

Albert Cuypmarkt

Street markets are very common throughout Europe, so checking out the Netherlands largest street market seems like a no brainer! The Albert Cuypmarkt has everything from food to antiques and is described by Lonely Planet as a place to experience the real Amsterdam at its multicultural best. We'd love to snag a few vintage pieces of home decor or clothing to make for some unique souvenirs.

Nine Little Streets

The Nine Little Streets are just that, a collection of nine little streets nestles between the Singel and Prinsengracht canals. The streets are full of shops and boutiques full of vintage clothes, home decor, and more. There's also a great selection of small cafes and chocolate shops.

Heineken Brewery Tour

Heineken beer is brewed in Amsterdam and visitors to Amsterdam can enjoy a tour of the brewery complete with a canal ride and plenty of beer samples. We're interested in getting a behind-the-scenes look at this beer that's enjoyed around the world.

The benefits of boutique hotels

Posted: August, 22 2014

The benefits to choosing a boutique-style hotel over a chain hotel are many, especially when traveling abroad. Boutique hotels offer travelers a more authentic look into the culture and lifestyle of the host country and often over a variety of benefits that can’t be reaped from your typical chain hotel.

Size
Boutique hotels are typically smaller in size than your standard chain hotel with most boutique hotels having well under 100 rooms. Fewer rooms give boutique hotels a more personal feel and often mean hotel staff is able to focus more of their attention on each guest's needs.

Personality
Boutique hotels are often full of personality. Many of these hotels are in historical buildings with charm and details unachievable through modern-day construction and even if the boutique hotel is of the newer variety, they are often still packed with personality punch and feature hip, trendy, modern, romantic or whimsical themes that run throughout the hotel spaces. Many boutique hotels also select themes for each hotel room, making each room unique and one-of-a-kind.

Service-Oriented Atmosphere
As we discussed earlier, the small size of boutique hotels often means they are able to focus more of their resources on making each guest’s stay memorable through exceptional service.  It might be something like designer bath products, a free bottle of wine upon check-in, personalized dining and entertainment recommendations, or complimentary breakfast.

Price
When you compare prices between boutique hotels and chain hotels, you may be surprised to find that boutique hotels often offer a lot more value for your money. A recent study actually found that a boutique hotel is typically 20 percent cheaper than a comparable chain establishment. This makes booking a boutique hotel over a chain hotel practically a no-brainer.

Variety
Since boutique hotels are often independently owned and not part of a large network like chain hotels, you’ll find that boutique hotels offer more in terms of variety. No matter what your personal preferences when it comes to a hotel, there is likely a boutique hotel to meet your needs. In the same city, you’ll likely find modern boutique hotels, historical boutique hotels, hotels with pools, hotels with roof-top terraces, hotels with in-house restaurants and pubs, hotels with themes like art or music, hotels that allow dogs, hotels that offer suites or apartments with kitchenettes and living spaces, hotels that have spas or saunas, hotels with childcare, or any other hotel amenity you might fancy.

Greek Island Guide: Santorini

Posted: August, 11 2014

Like Mykonos, Santorini is also part of the Cyclades. The island is known as one of the most beautiful of all the Greek islands and is among the most popular for tourists and travelers.

The Island
The cities of Fira, Oia, Imerovigli are all built into the sharp cliffs and hillsides of the island, providing magnificent views of the Aegean sea. The entire center of the island sunk into the sea 3,500 years ago as the result of a volcanic eruption. The remaining portion of the island is in a crescent shape that creates a vast bay.

Beaches

Red Beach in Santorini is a sight to be seen. Instead of white sandy beaches, Red Beach has red and black volcanic pebbles that lead into a hot sea. The beach is also steps away from the ancient site of Akrotiri, so you can get two attractions at once while you’re in the area. The beach is small, so it can be crowded at times, but this may very well be the only chance you have to see such a unique beach, so it’s worth fighting the crowds.

Villages

Oia is the most popular village of Santorini. It’s known for its quiet left and amazing sunsets and is among the most picturesque villages on the island. The village is situated on the top of an impressive cliff, offering amazing views.
The town has plenty of tourist shops, taverns, cafes, art shops and other shops. The Maritime Museum is also in Oia and features a small library, maritime artifacts, and the vestiges of a Venetian fortress.

Fira is the capital of Santorini and is much busier than Oia, but still just as enjoyable. The central streets of the town can be extremely crowded during peak tourism season. There are plenty of shops, jewelers, restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs. The Archaeological Museum provides for a great glimpse into the history and culture of the island and hosts many items from excavations in the town. There are also many churches and monasteries.

Imerovigli is considered a continuation of Fira, but is known to be much quieter and peaceful. It’s home to one of the most amazing balconies of the island and provides some of the most breathtaking views of the sea and coastline. Due to its calm atmosphere and amazing views, Imerovigli is known as an ultimate destination for romantics. The above photo may look like a snow-capped mountain, but this is actually a photo of Imerovigli. The white cap is actually clusters of white buildings.

Attractions
In the center of Santorini’s vast bay there are two small islands made of black lava. Nea Kameni is popular with tourists due to its healing hot springs. These springs of yellow water have high sulfur content and are recognized as therapeutic.

Tourists can visit the volcano that created Santorini’s crescent shape by taking one of the daily boat rides advertised in the villages. Tourists can walk right up the cooled black lava sides of the volcano that still steams to this day. Once on the shore of Nea Kameni, its about a 20 minute walk to see the volcano’s crater and other openings of sulfurous steam. From this vantage point, you can also see amazing views of Santorini’s coastline that is speckled with bright white buildings and cobalt blue rooftops.

Akrotiri Minoan is an archeological site situated close to Santorini’s famed Red Beach. The excavation of this site began in the 1870s where traces of an ancient settlement were unearthed.  Archeologists believe the town was constructed around 4,500 B.C and was destroyed by an earthquake in the 17th century. A new town was constructed on top of the ruins and this town too was later destroyed by a volcanic eruption a century later in 1,650 B.C. The lava and ash from the eruption preserved the town and has left in nearly fully intact all these years later.

Greek Island Guide: Mykonos

Posted: August, 10 2014

Since Small & Elegant Hotels is now partnered with hotels on two of Greece’s most visited islands, we thought we’d take a moment to explore what these islands have to offer. The country of Greece includes more than 1,200 islands. Only around 200 of these islands is inhabited by people.

The Island
Mykonos is part of the Cyclades, which is composed of 220 islands. The island is home to around 10,000 inhabitants, many who live on the island’s largest town, Mykonos. The island is comprised of mostly granite and is very rocky. Many areas of the island have been eroded away by strong winds.

Weather
Mykonos is sunny 300 days of the year and only experiences rain during February and March, making it an excellent destination for those looking for some exquisite weather. The island is also nicknamed “Capri of Greece” for all of its beaches. Combined with the sun, it’s a fantastic vacation destination for those who enjoy beaches, but would also like to experience a new culture and country.

Architecture
Like many islands in Greece, Mykonos towns usually consist of all white buildings with bright royal blue accents. These buildings are scattered and cling to steep hillsides along the coast and interiors of the island.

Attractions
Mykonos is famous for its beach clubs and nightlife so there’s no shortage of excitement for those that enjoy late nights, loud music, and dancing. Even if you aren’t much of a partier, its worth spending at least one night of your visit in one of the island’s many clubs just to experience it for yourself.

The Mykonos windmills are a landmark attraction. These windmills can be seen from every viewpoint in the town of Mykonos, Many of them were built by the Venetians in the 16th century to mill wheat.

Little Venice, a neighborhood in Mykonos, is often described as one of the most stunning places on the island. It overlooks the southwest end of the island. Many of the most stunning homes in the neighborhood were constructed by long ago ship captains who came to the island to settle down. Today, many of these captains’ homes have been transformed into restaurants, bars, stores, and nightclubs that are enjoyed by both locals and tourists alike.

Two miles south of the town of Mykonos is Paradise Beach. This is one of the island’s most popular beaches. It’s also the island’s original nudist beach, so be prepared to get an eyeful of your fellow sunbathers. The beach is known for its upbeat and party-like atmosphere.

If nude party beaches aren’t your cup of tea, Psarou Beach may be a better fit. This beach is known for its more relaxed atmostphere, making it a popular choice for families and honeymooners.

Getting Around
In the town of Mykonos, motor vehicles are actually banned so all residents and visitors travel by foot or ride bicycles. Mykonos also has an excellent bus system so exploring beyond the town of Mykonos is a breeze. Renting a car is usually not suggested as it can be expensive and difficult to find a place to park.

Common differences between US and European hotel rooms

Posted: August, 09 2014

If you’ve never traveled to Europe before, you may be surprised by some major differences between your standard American hotel room and a standard hotel room in Europe. Many of these quirks can be credited to the age of many of the buildings European hotels are housed within. These 100, sometimes 200+ year old buildings simply can’t accommodate the same sized rooms and features as those you’d find in your standard newly constructed Holiday Inn in the United States. Not only that, but culture and customs are much different in Europe and most Europeans in big cities are perfectly content in tiny apartments and living spaces.

To help ease the surprise or confusion you may experience upon entering your first European hotel room, here are some of the biggest differences you’ll find when staying abroad.

1. Space. As we briefly mentioned above, space is a precious commodity in Europe, especially in its most dense cities. Most locals live in small living spaces and accept it as the norm. Most buildings in these cities have been around for hundreds of years and weren’t built with the modern-day traveler in mind. So be prepared to get a little less space than you would for the equivalent nightly rate in the United States, especially if you are in a city center. This isn’t universal though as many hotels have found creative ways to make larger hotel rooms to accommodate American travelers or those who simply want more space and of course the larger your budget for a hotel, the more space you'll likely be able to afford. Many of the luxury boutique hotels we work with at Small & Elegant Hotels offer rooms very similar in size to what you'd expect from an American hotel.

Another aspect of European hotels that may be a surprise is the size of hotel elevators. If your hotel in Europe has an elevator, it was likely a big challenge to find space and a way to install the elevator in the old structure. This often results in tiny, coat closet sized elevators that can only fit two to three people with luggage and even that is a squeeze. If you have a larger group of travelers with you or have a lot of luggage, you'll likely need to make multiple trips!

2. Electricity.  Voltage in Europe is twice what it is in the United States. You will likely need to purchase an adapter and converter kit that can accommodate different outlets and voltage levels so that you can safely use any electronics. Hair dryers can especially be a challenge, as they require massive amounts of power. If you need to bring your hairdryer along, make sure you bring a heavy-duty converter that can handle up to 2000 watts.

3. Bathrooms. We’ve already established that space is precious in Europe, so it should be no surprise that hotel bathrooms may also be smaller than you’d expect. Many times showers are compact, hand-held showers are common, and sometimes determining how to turn on the hot water can be confusing. If that’s the case, some hotels actually post instructions next to the shower.

Bathroom linens can also be different. Most Europeans don’t use giant-sized, plush towels like Americans. Bath towels are more often much smaller throughout the rest of the world.

4. The first floor. When you think of the first floor of a hotel, you likely think of the ground floor where you enter the hotel. However, in Europe, the first floor is often the first floor off of ground level or what Americans would call the second floor. Keep this in mind when booking your hotel room or trying to find your room.

5. Double beds. Some hotels in Europe that advertise double beds have two twin beds instead of a full bed. It’s perfectly normal in Europe to either sleep on the two separate beds or to push the beds together. If this arrangement is unappealing to you, make sure you confirm the bed situation with your booking agent.

Why you should visit Iceland

Posted: July, 21 2014

Iceland may not be on your list of places you want to visit, but it should be. Many vacationers often overlook this beautiful country perhaps out of fear of cold weather and lack of things to do, but in reality Iceland is a country full of culture and amazing sights that are unlike anything you could find anywhere else in the world.

Perhaps the biggest draw of Iceland is its location. You may not have realized this, but Iceland is a short 5-hour flight from Boston, Washington D.C. and New York City. This is a great way to experience another country without the jet lag.

If you’re visiting Iceland, you’ll most likely end up in Reykjavik, the country’s capital and largest city boasting a modest population of 200,000 (the whole country has only 300,000 people).  The city is known for its friendly culture and its bustling music scene, as well as exuberant nightlife. Small & Elegant Hotels has partnered with Hotel Kvosin in Reykjavik making it easy to find a quality place to stay during your visit.

Iceland is a country with breathtaking scenery. Everywhere you turn, there’s another beautiful site to be seen. Iceland has mystic snow-capped mountains, glaciers, forests, rivers, waterfalls and lava fields. There are also many hot pools that visitors can take a dip in, the most famous being the Blue Lagoon. These natural pools are heated by volcanic activity and date back to Viking times.

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights, Iceland is perhaps the easiest way to do it.  Like we said previously, it’s only a 5-hour flight from our east coast. Also, many hotels in Iceland will lookout for the lights and give a wake-up call to guests when they appear.

Iceland is the outdoor enthusiast’s dream. It’s a country full of adventure and opportunities for horseback riding, mountain biking, kayaking, river rafting, caving, whale watching, birding, hunting, hiking and more.

Iceland also has a fabulously sophisticated European culture based on traditions that trace back to the days of the Vikings. Iceland is a great way to get a taste of Europe without the expense and the hours upon hours of travel time. If Icelandic history is something that really interests you, there are also many museums in Iceland dedicated to exploring the country’s long history.

Pack smart for your European vacation

Posted: July, 21 2014

Packing for a vacation in a foreign country is a little different than packing for your typical vacation. Varying climates depending on where you visit, the walking culture of most European cities, and dress codes at some of Europe’s most famous attractions can all impact how and what you pack. Below are our favorite tips for packing for a European vacation.

1. Walking attire and shoes. Most people traveling to Europe, especially for the first time, will do a lot of walking. Most European cities are extremely pedestrian-friendly and walking is often the easiest way to get from place to place. This is why it’s very important to wear comfortable shoes that you can wear for hours. You really only need a pair of walking shoes and perhaps one pair of nice shoes that you can wear on an evening out to dinner. That’s it. It’s important not to over pack for your European vacation. As for walking attire, you’ll want to bring clothing that is light—think light t-shirts, Capri pants, and other attire that you can wear all day long without getting uncomfortable or too warm. You may also want to bring a hat if you're going to warmer locations. Think of what kind of clothing you’d wear on a hiking adventure and this is similar to what you should wear for a day walking around Europe!

2. Versatile clothing. Packing light is really the key to a European vacation and by bringing versatile clothing you are minimizing how much stuff you need to bring on your trip. European vacations are typically longer than the standard weeklong vacation and can be as long as two weeks or more. You need to find ways to make your wardrobe stretch by bringing pieces that can be combined into several different outfits. Also remember to bring items that are easy to clean if you find yourself running out of clothing or needing to clean pieces that are dirty. Avoid any items that are dry clean only or have very specific cleaning instructions.

3. Plan for dress codes. Many attractions in Europe, especially in Italy, have dress codes. These dress codes are most often found at religious sites. For example, at the Vatican, guests are not permitted to bear their shoulders. Due to the heat in Rome, wearing longer sleeves all day just so you can get inside the Vatican would make for a long and uncomfortable day. Instead, bring a light cardigan in your backpack or purse that you can easily put on right before entering.  Many places also offer smocks resembling hospital gowns for guests to wear if they are exposing too much skin, but in case they don’t, it’s always good to be prepared and have a cardigan ready.

4. Secure purses and backpacks. Just like any large city, theft is a common occurrence. Pickpockets roam the streets in these large cities looking for people to steal from. To avoid becoming a victim, bring purses that zip close at the top so that no one can sneak into your bag. If you’ll be traveling with a backpack, you can purchase backpacks with built-in locks or purchase your own locks to secure your zipper compartments. Although they may seem safe, avoid fanny packs! These packs can be easily unlocked on your back and stolen and since they are strapped around your waste and easily ignored, it may be awhile before you even notice it’s missing.

5. Technology. While you may want to bring your laptop, cell phone, iPad, and camera on your European vacation, keep in mind that the more technology you bring, the more technology you have to keep track of as you move from destination to destination and different hotels during your trip. Try to bring only the pieces that you absolutely need like your cell phone that can also double as your camera and your lap top if you need it for work-related activities while you travel, but if the computer is just for leisure, leave it at home!

Small & Elegant Hotels explores the Amalfi Coast

Posted: July, 14 2014

One of Small & Elegant Hotels favorite areas in italy is the Amalfi Coast.  This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a picturesque part of Italy, renowned for majestic sea views and stunning scenery.

This is why we've sent Konnie out to Italy last week to explore the Amalfi Coast and build relationships with new hotel partners. While in Italy, she of course had to stop in one of our favorite areas, Trastevere in Rome, to explore even more Small & Elegant Hotel options there.

While away, Konnie has shared some photos from her trip that have us eager for our own next trip to Italy! Enjoy the photos, along with her commentary, below!

Myself and Angela, also from Small & Elegant Hotels, sandwich Rosita in this photo at one of our lovely properties, Albergo Miramare in Positano, Amalfi Coast.  Rosita always takes such good care of our clients.

The view from Albergo Miramare, a Small & Elegant Hotels favorite.

After a "tough" day of touring hotels, you have to eat. This famous restaurant Torre Normanna, in Maiori. A restaurant literally in the sea!

My guide, Luca, at the Hotel Poseidon. I guess everything is beautiful here!

Top destinations in Italy

Posted: July, 14 2014

Being travel professionals, we love to share our knowledge with our clients to help them make their trips more enjoyable and memorable. Whether it’s recommendations on the best parts of town to stay or where to dine for a romantic evening out, we can help.

Today on our blog we’re exploring Italy. This fabulous country is one of the most-visited European countries and for good reason—amazing history, delicious food, amazing wine, friendly locals, and great weather!
While deciding to visit Italy may be a no brainer, deciding exactly where in Italy to visit can be a challenge! With so many amazing cities and regions to explore, it can be difficult to pick just one or two.
To hopefully help aid you in your decision, we’ve summarized some of the perks of each of our favorite Italian destinations below.

Rome
If for any reason you’re on the fence about visiting Rome, don’t be. This city is one of the most amazing destinations in Italy, especially for first-time visitors who have never experienced Italy before.  Rome is very tourist friendly, so if you’re apprehensive about visiting a country that speaks another language, Rome would be a great way to get your feet wet in a new country and culture. Many locals speak English and even if they aren’t fluent, they are often familiar with enough English to get by and communicate with you.

Rome is full of big hitters like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountrain, Pantheon, Roman Forum, St. Peter’s Basillica, Spanish Steps, and the Sistine Chapel. These are all pieces of our world’s history that everyone should get to see for themselves at least once in their lifetime.

Rome is also close to Florence and Naples, making it easy to tack those additional cities onto your trip without sacrificing too much of your precious time to travel.

Venice
Up North and on the other side of the Italian peninsula, you’ll find the city of Venice. If you’re visiting Rome, we’d save Venice for a separate trip due to distance, but if you don’t think you’ll find yourself in Italy again and you’re doing an extended stay in Italy, then it may be worth fitting into your trip.

Instead of streets, Venice has canals—where boats and gondolas navigate the narrow waterways between buildings rather than streets full of cars. Its definitely a site to be seen and its amazingly fascinating to see buildings that look as though they’re on flooded streets, but in reality they were built to be in the water.

Nowhere else in the world will you find a city like Venice. Beyond admiring the canals, in Venice you can visit Saint Mark’s Basilica, which is home to the famed St. Mark’s Square; peruse the Rialto markets full or rainbows of fresh produce; enjoy a Gondola ride through the canals; and take a trip to Burano island, a island in Venice marked by brightly colored buildings and known for being less congested and more laid back than the heart of Venice.

Naples
It seems many people forget about Naples when it comes time to plan their Italian vacation, but we’re here to give this city its much-deserved credit. Naples is a gorgeous seaside city that’s definitely worth a visit. Naples sits north of the Amalfi Coast, which is a region in Italy that sees a lot of tourist traffic, however Naples itself is left mostly unbothered by tourism.
While Naples doesn’t have big hitter tourist attractions like the Colosseum or a canal system, it isn’t without its own appeal and charm.  Naples is home to the archeological sites of Pompeii and Vesuvius, two cites that were frozen in time by a volcanic eruption that spewed ash and lava. Naples is also famous for being the home of the Neapolitan pizza and delicious, yet very very strong coffee.

Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coastline on the southern coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula in Italy. It’s a popular destination for tourists all over the world and features some of the most breathtaking views you’ll find in all of italy thanks to the rocky coast that provides for peaks perfect for taking in the expansive views.

In the Positano municipality of the Amalfi Coast you can check out Sentiero degli Dei Lemon Point, that provides soma amazingly scenic walking trails and is a great way to enjoy a little bit of nature during your vacation. There’s also the amazing views at Sul Sentiero degli Dei in Praiano if you’re the type that can’t get enough of walking trails.

Other attractions include Villa Cimbrone Gardens, amazing limoncello and other fresh lemon products (the Amalfi Coast is a large producer of lemons), and historical religious sites like Duomo di Sant’Andrea Apostolo and Duomo di Salerno. The Amalfi Coast is also home to Coast Road, a scenic coastal drive that is among the most beautiful drives in Europe.

The perks of apartment renting in Europe

Posted: July, 14 2014

When planning for a family vacation, finding hotel accommodations that can fit everyone can be a challenge. This can especially be the case when traveling abroad to Europe where hotel rooms are typically much smaller than the hotels you’d find in the States.  However, there’s a way to keep your family together in one unit without everyone piling into one bed—apartment rentals.

Many people don’t think to look into renting an apartment on vacation, but it can be a great way to accommodate a large family or group of friends traveling together. It’s also great for long trips and provides you with a much more cozy and home-like setting that often includes wonderful amenities like separate living areas and full kitchens.

Even if you don’t have a large group to travel with, apartments are also wonderful for small groups or traveling couples. They provide a tranquil and peaceful retreat after a day of sightseeing and exploring.  A luxurious apartment would make for a fantastic honeymoon suite or place to stay for a romantic getaway. For example, Rome vacationers can go to the market, purchase fresh-made pasta, ingredients for sauce, and a bottle of wine to take back to the apartment to prepare a romantic meal together to enjoy in the privacy of your own kitchen and dining room. Perhaps you may even have a private balcony to enjoy a decadent dessert you picked up at a Roman bakery.

No matter how you’re traveling, an apartment is certainly a luxurious way to spend your nights while exploring Europe.

Small and Elegant Hotels works with apartment rentals all over Europe and we love recommending them to guests who need a little more room than the standard hotel room or would like the extra comfort of being able to have a full kitchen to prep breakfast for children or eat-in on occasion during a trip.

When searching the Small & Elegant Hotels website for apartments, first select your destination city. From there, you’ll see all of the accommodations in that city broken up into categories, one of which is apartments. Nearly every destination in our portfolio includes apartment selections, so no matter where you’re headed on your next trip, there will likely be an apartment to fit your needs.

Speaking Italian 101

Posted: July, 07 2014

If you're headed abroad this summer, it's always wise to have an understanding of key conversational phrases common in the language of the country you're visiting. Today, we're going to provide you with some phrases to use throughout the country of Italy. Having a basic understanding of a few phrases can really go a long way and locals really appreciate the effort of tourists who take the time to understand at least bits and pieces of the language. Simple greetings and polite phrases can go a long way on your travels to foreign countries.

Hello: Ciao

How are you?: Come va?

My name is...: Mi chiamo....

What's your name?: Come ti chiami?

Pleased to meet you: Piacere di conoscerti

Good night: Buonanotte

I don't understand: Non capisco

How much is this?: Quanto costa?

Thank you: Grazie

You're Welcome: Prego

Excuse me (let me through): Permesso

Sorry: Scusa!

I'm from...: Vengo da...

Where's the bathroom?: Dov'è la toilette?

Beyond language, Italy is also a country of many hand gestures. You may have heard that Italians like to talk with their hands and this statement is very true. Italians use a variety of common hand gestures and movements along with speech to emphasize points and show emotion. Having an understanding of common gestures in addition to language can make it a little easier to communicate with non-English or little English speakers in Italy as well as avoid confusion. The Guardian made this excellent guide to Italian hand guestures that you can find on their website by clicking here. Below are two gestures from the article to give you a peek.

"Delicious!" Rub finger into your cheek. Look happy.

"Come here!" Wags hand downward

If you’re one of the thousands of American families headed to France this summer for vacation, we highly recommend you get a taste (or two or three) of France’s baked goods and sweets. The country is known for its wonderfully delicious pastries and other sweets like the macaron.

The macaron, not to be confused with the coconut treat macaroon, is a ganache or jam filling sandwiched between two almond meringue cookies. Recently, these delectable cookies have been gaining in popularity at bakeries all across the United States, but in France they’ve been a long held staple of the country’s confections. These treats are so wildly popular and common in France that even McDonald’s locations in Paris sell them.

There are a few key components to a delicious macaron. First, the cookie-to-filling ratio should be 1 to 1 or 2 to 1. The filling should never be a thin layer. It should extend to the edges and bulge out between the two cookies. The cookie should be crisp on the outside and light and slightly chewy on the inside. To a macron novice, the insides of a perfect macaron may seem undercooked, but this soft center is the ideal.
The almond meringue cookie itself dates back to as far as 1792 and in the early 1900s, Pierre Desfontaines of a Parisian pastry shop called Laduree decided to take two cookies and fill them with rich and creamy ganache. This is where the above-mentioned standards for the perfect macaron were first established.

Laduree is still around today and if you’re like us and have a soft spot for sweets, its definitely a must-visit, especially if you are a lover of macarons or have yet to try the treat for yourself. There are locations all over France, so regardless of which of our lovely Small & Elegant Hotels you are staying at, there’s bound to be a Laduree nearby!

Perhaps the most well visited location of Laduree is on the famed Champs Elysees, a picturesque Paris street known for its luxury shopping and eateries.

If you are fortunate enough to find yourself at Laduree this summer, we highly recommend the classic flavors of vanilla, pistachio, and salted caramel. The shop also has a variety of seasonal flavors that are always interesting blends of flavor and worth a taste.  Your best bet is probably to buy a whole box of hand picked flavors to sample as you stroll through the rest of Champs Elysees!

The European Experience: Take a Tour or Explore On Your Own?

Posted: June, 30 2014

While vacationing in Europe there are many ways to experience and see a city. Some people opt to be part of organized tour groups that go from tourist destination to destination and plan out your day in a tidy itinerary where everything is mapped out including bathroom breaks, time for photos, and lunch. However, if you have the time and are up to the adventure, exploring Europe without the aid of a tour group can be an exciting adventure that leads you to hidden treasures throughout your host city.

Part of the reason our customers come back again and again to Small & Elegant Hotels is because we offer them beautiful boutique-style accommodations that aren't cookie cutter. The hotels we partner with give our customers a more authentic taste of what living in that country feels like. You get a taste of the country and city's architecture, art, culture, and get to experience a level of hospitality that's often unmatched. When you decide to go out alone and explore the city you're visiting instead of taking cookie-cutter tours, you get to further extend this authentic experience. You can sneak away to alleyways or stay a little longer and admire the view of the Eiffel Tower. You can chat with the owner of the bakery or enjoy a cup of espresso along the busy street beside a cafe. You can choose to view art at a gallery that's off the beaten path and pick and choose which attractions are most interesting to you.

While we highly suggest to our customers that they take the opportunity to explore on their own terms while vacationing in Europe, there are some situations where of course organized tours are much more suitable. If you're leary of your ability to navigate a foreign city, can't walk for long distances, don't have much time at the destination, or don't enjoy the work of planning your own itinerary, partaking in an organized tour is perfect for your needs and will be a very enjoyable and fulfilling experience. These tours are among the easiest ways to make sure you get to see all the must-see attractions. Tours often also provide information on the histories of many attractions, giving you a great insight.

The point of this post is to encourage those on the fence. If you have an interest in exploring on your own, but need a little encouragement, consider yourself encouraged by this post and explore! You'll return home with memories that will last a lifetime and never fade.

Trains, Cars, Subways, Buses & Bikes: Our Guide to Getting Around in Europe

Posted: June, 27 2014

In most big European cities, you'll find that many locals don't own cars. Walking, biking, and public transportation are so accessible and easy that owning your own vehicle isn't necessary or even missed. As a tourist though, navigating the many transporation options can be intimidating.

As we mentioned in our last blog post, private transfer companies can provide an elegant and hassle-free way to get anywhere you need to go on your trip, but if you're itching to go at it alone and live more like a local, it can be easily done.

Subway: Most European cities have advanced and intricate subway systems that can take you all over town. Day/Week passes are often sold to provide you even easier access to the system. With a pass, you can ride as many times as you want until the pass date is expired. A foldable subway map or having a subway map bookmarked on your smartphone are also a good idea so you have easy access to all of the routes and stop locations. Also, don't be afraid to ask locals or individuals who work at the subway station to help you find the best route to your destination.

Bus: Public transit via bus is also another way to get around. Like the subway, you can often purchase multi-day passes that give you unlimited access. Stops are also almost always close to popular tourist destinations so you won't ever have to walk too far to get where you need to go. The most difficult part of using the bus system is timing. Buses only come to stops so often, so sometimes you may find yourself waiting awhile for the next bus to come by. Buses also only run until a certain hour of the night, so you need to make sure you get back to your hotel before the last bus runs for the day.

Bicycle: If you're coordinated enough and in good enough shape, a bicycle can be a fun way to get around. In many cities, like Amsterdam for instance, locals utilize bicycles as their primary form of transportation. In Amsterdam, there are actually more bicylces than there are people! There are so many bikes that they have dedicated parking lots for bikes only which you can see in the photo above. Some cities are more well-suited for bicycle travel than others so do a little research beforehand to see if your destination is a good fit for this mode of transportation. Even if you don't want to rely on bikes for all your transporation, it can be a fun activity for a day on your trip.

Train: When traveling between European cities, trains are often the most popular and economical choice. For example, if you're in Rome and want to check out Florence or are in Paris and want to see Versailles, a quick train ride can get you there in a few hours. It's much easier than getting to your destination by car and gives you a few hours to get some rest from all the walking you've likely been doing. Trains are also helpful to get to cities that are further apart as well and give you a great glimpse of the countryside that is often marked by mountains, fields, rolling hills, and quaint little towns. Above you can see a map of Europe's High Speed Rail system and how it can get you to nearly any city in the Union.

Take the hassle out of travel with airport transfers

Posted: June, 27 2014

The flight to Europe from the United States is long and exhausting. Often, you are flying all night across the Atlantic and to your destination. Once you get to your destination city it's time to find your way to your hotel. Sometimes this is simple and sometimes this can be more of a challenge. You can take a cab ride, but there may be a language barrier and communication issues, that can make communicating your hotel destination difficult. And even if the hotel is understood, does he know the quickest, best route or will he take you on a joy ride to bring up your tab? Even the smoothest cab rides still cost a pretty penny.

This is why Small & Elegant Hotels has partnered with premier Transfer companies that can make your transition from airport to hotel as seamless, worry-free and enjoyable as possible. We've partnered with Kristy's Cars in Paris and Knight Executive in London. When working with either company, you as a traveler will be greeted by a driver that speaks impeccable English and the rate you'll pay for your transfer will have been established before you even left the States and in some cases, you may have even prepaid. Your driver will be waiting for you with your name on a sign at Baggage Claim/Customs. They'll escort you to a luxury vehicle and whisk you away to your hotel taking the best and quickest route. You won't have to share your ride with any other travelers, you won't have to wait for the driver to show up, and you won't have any questions on whether you're headed to the correct hotel and taking the best route. You can simply sit back and relax after your long day of travel.

Once you're settled into your hotel, you can later arrange for Kristy's or Knight to take you on tours or trips around the city or countryside, avoiding the sometimes unpleasant experience of packed public transportation or bus tours. And beyond being your escort, these drivers are able to make excellent recommendations on what you should see and do while you're visiting. They can give you tips on where to have an elegant dinner or what tourist sites are worth a visit and which are best to skip.

Working with a transfer company to take you to and from the airport and around town while on vacation is among the most luxurious and excellent ways to travel. This is why we're so happy to be able to partner with Kristy's and Knight and give you one less thing to worry about on your next vacation.

Must-see attractions in London

Posted: June, 17 2014

The things to see and do in London can be overwhelming and while it would be nice to have time to see it all, that's usually not the case. However, to help pick and choose what to see and do, we've picked a few key attractions that any first-time London visitor should check out to get the full London experience.

For example, Buckingham Palace is home to Queen Elizabeth II and is open for tours during the summer and an audio guide is included in the price. The audio aspect of the tour is a great way to get a few history lessons to help you appreciate and experience the palace to its fullest. If you don't have time to take a tour, stopping by to at least witness the changing of the guard which happens daily at 11:30 AM May through late July and every other day the rest of the year.

The Houses of Parliament is also a must-see for London newbies. This government building is home to the clock famously known as "Big Ben" and provides for a cliche, but totally necessary photo opportunity for tourists. Tours are also available of the 1,000-room palace made up of the House of Lords and the House of Commons.

For a good photo opportunity and an amazing view of the city, check out Tower Bridge. A stroll across this bridge provides an expansive view of the city landscape and a great place to take amazing photos. Another great vantage point can be found on the London Eye, a giant Ferris wheel that provides one-of-a-kind views of downtown London from 400 feet in the air. Lines can be long, but the view is something you can't experience anywhere else and is one of those things you need to do at least once in your life.

If you're looking for a high quality free attraction in London, the British Museum is a great option. This free museum provides access to some of the world's most charished treasures like the Rosetta Stone. The building itself is also a sight to be seen with its harmonious blend of old and new architecture.

For those that love a good market, the Old Spitalfields Market is a great bohemian-esque market in East London that features a variety of eateries,  retro clothing, arts, crafts and other market goods. Its a great place to pick up a souvenir that feels a little more authentic than the usual magnet, ornament, or t-shirt.

While we're on the topic of shopping, I don't think we can accurately provide advice on what to see and do in London without mentioning Harrods. This famed department store is much more than a shopping destination and is a tourist destination in itself with extravagant and regal architecture and decor as well as attractons like a shrine to Princess Diana.

If you've been to London, let us know what spots are on your must-see list in the comments of this post.

Small & Elegant Hotels guide to dining in London

Posted: June, 17 2014

London is full of so many eateries that there’s something for everyone and the city can satiate any appetite and budget. If you have plans to stay at one of our many amazing hotels in the city, here are our top picks for getting a bite to eat between seeing Big Ben and riding a double decker bus.

Breakfast

Immerse yourself in the English culture with a tasty breakfast at Regency Café in Westminster.  The eatery has 4.5 out of 5 stars on Yelp and reviewers rave about dishes like the Full English Breakfast featuring scrambled eggs, hash, bacon, sausage, tomatoes and mushrooms or the Steak Pie with chips and peas. This diner-style establishment is laid back and reasonably priced, making it a great way to start a day full of sightseeing.

Quick Lunch

The café atmosphere at Fernandez & Wells makes it a great choice for diners looking for a quick bite to eat for lunch in the midst of a busy day or touring the city.  Yelpers suggest the tasty sandwich menu featuring items like grilled chorizo, black pudding, and croissants stuffed with ingredients like ham and cheese, pancetta, or cheese and tomato. They also serve coffee from Monmouth Coffee, a company local to London that is recognized for its commitment to quality beans.

Family Friendly

Family friendly doesn’t have to mean boring and Belgo Centraal is a great eatery option for families that can please pee-wee and adult appetites alike. The restaurant serves up Belgian fare including delicious mussels, colossal waffles, and delicious pomme frites. They also have a kid’s menu and the industrial-style laid-back atmosphere provides for a not-too-stuffy place perfect for little ones.

Date Night

When visiting London, it’s a must to have a meal at one of the city’s more high-end restaurants and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal is just the ticket.  The restaurant is ranked as one of the top restaurants in the world and has two Michelin Stars. The menu is full of dishes inspired by historical British dishes. Diners on Yelp rave about the Meat Fruit Pie which is Mandarin, chicken liver, and foie gras parfait served with grilled bread.

Sweet Treats

If you find yourself with a sweet tooth while visiting London, Laduree is the cure. While it’s a little more fancy than your traditional bakery, it’s the perfect tourist stop to get something unique and delicious. While authentic French macarons are their specialty, they also serve up a variety of cream puffs, cakes, tarts, and pastries.
