Country House Palazzone was built in medieval times and is located not far from Rocca Ripesena in the area northwest of Orvieto, in Umbria. This building is an exceptional example of a country residence: it possesses all the characteristics of a town palazzo, even though it stands alone at the top of a hill in the open countryside. Its architectural structure and construction elements, as well as its ornamental details, can indeed be seen in the most important civic buildings in the town of Orvieto from the late 1200s —such as the Palazzo del Popolo and the Papal Palace— all of which allow us to specify the type and date the building, placing it alongside those similar palaces built in town in the last quarter of the 13th century.
In 1969 our father, Angelo, began renovating the farmhouses, the first step in the reconverting of what until that time had been an abandoned estate. Over the years we have planted hectares of vineyards, built cellars for vinifying and aging, and produced wines of great character and complexity. Today “Palazzone” is one of Umbria’s major wine labels. Surrounded by vineyards and oak and chestnut woods, the historic “Palazzone” edifice—though still spectacular in its austere and imposing bulk—was slowly falling into ruin. The time had come to make a dream come true and to restore the superb Palazzone and return it to its original “hospitality” function, in order to welcome modern wayfarers seeking sensations, tranquility, emotions, history, flavors and beauty. Thus “Palazzone” has become the country house “Locanda Palazzone.” Lodovico and Patrizia will welcome you and make sure that your stay with us will be pleasant and unforgettable. Palazzone is located on hill in the open Orvieto countryside, surrounded by vineyards on the side of the hill between Rocca Ripesena and the Hermitage. Unfolding before it to the southeast is a view of the tuffaceous spur of Rocca Ripesena and the Paglia river valley, with the great Orvieto massif in the background.Nature expresses all its dynamic vitality in this wild but gentle spot, displaying its ancient creations that have endured over time like sculptures in a natural museum: the atoll of tuff that dominates the Rocca Ripesena landscape, legacy of ancient tumultuous volcanic activity, forms a link with the tuffaceous tabletop upon which the town of Orvieto rises, embracing woods with enormous oaks and mighty chestnuts and hills furrowed with golden vineyards, an expression of the industriousness of the people who live and work in these areas.Sitting in the living room of the suite and looking out from the mullioned windows, you will find yourself mesmerized by the profound landscape that sweeps endlessly toward the horizon. The elegant and comfortable suites were created respecting the original Palazzone architectural structure, and are furnished with all the comforts and conveniences needed to make your stay exclusive and unforgettable. Every suite has heating and air-conditioning, satellite TV, radio, direct-dial telephone, fast Internet connection, a small safety-deposit box, minibar and electric kettle for brewing your favorite tea or tisane.Cribs or small beds with side railings for children are available based on the combinations offered by the suites and upon request made at the time of booking.
The country house Locanda Palazzone staff will straighten and change the linen every morning. Breakfast is served in the garden, with natural products prepared in our kitchen. Supper is served Tuesday, Friday and Saturday evenings in the garden or in the enoteca (wine bar). The chef’s proposals will allow you to discover typical local dishes. During the summer, suppers are prepared every evening except Thursday and Sunday. For relaxing, the swimming pool is open from May to October. The pool can be used freely, and changing rooms and showers are always at your disposal. There are countless nature routes winding through the area, starting with the “Path through the Woods.”
We will provide information on the best places to go for horseback riding, tennis, golf, and bicycle excursions. We often organize events at Palazzone, as well as guided tours to see the art and nature treasures of Umbria. Breakfast in the garden, exclusive dinners, suites with every convenience, open-air swimming pool, events organized, facilities nearby for activities, walks in the woods.
