The Whitehall Hotel

Step inside The Whitehall Hotel, and experience what Travel & Leisure magazine calls one of Chicago’s five great hotels and what Fortune magazine calls one of the eight great small hotels of the world. Step out-side, and find yourself on the Magnificent Mile – surrounded by the finest shops, museums, and entertainment in town.

The Whitehall began in 1928 as an elite apartment building, then became a hotel in 1972. Early guests like Katherine Hepburn, Sophia Loren, and Paul Newman helped launch the hotel’s long, legendary career. In the 1990s, a $25-million renovation restored the original character of The Whitehall and raised it to an unprecedented level of modern luxury. At the same time, the decor recaptured a distinctly Old World flavor. The lobby’s antique furnishings, floral-print carpeting, and portraits of noble four-legged companions set the overall ambience of an eighteenth-century manor house.

Guests’ rooms continue the European flavor with appointments such as linen floral coverlets, striped dust ruffles, Chippendale desks, and botanical prints. Bathrooms come with thick terry robes, hair dryers, makeup mirrors, and more.

Every room has comfortable seating, an honor bar, safe, and two multiline phones with voice mail and modem capability. Services range from concierge and 24-hour room service to complimentary morning coffee and newspaper.

Floors 18 through 21 constitute the Pinnacle Level, where the lodging affords an even higher level of luxury. Guests staying on the Pinnacle Level enjoy a private lounge for complimentary Continental breakfast, snacks, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres.

The Pinnacle Level holds all eight of the hotel’s suites. While each is distinct, all provide marble baths, a blend of new and antique furnishings, fax machines, dining areas, and parlors. Some include wet bars, and guests often host small social gatherings in these suites. But for larger banquets and meetings, they look to the five elegantly appointed function rooms and an Executive Boardroom on the second floor.

On the first floor, the new restaurant Molivè – an American bistro – dazzles guests with California cuisine, a chic atmosphere, and a 200-martini menu. Beyond the glass-enclosed atrium, the restaurant’s mahogany paneling, murals, and mosaics create a sophisticated yet playful mood for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks.

Every corner, every amenity, every aspect of service lives up to The Whitehall’s rich tradition and the standards expected from one of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Returning guests know they can count on a relaxing stay while sampling the many attractions of Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.

On the Gold Coast, across the street from the Four Seasons, the 221 room Whitehall Hotel promises luxury at a budget price.  It has amenities to match its upscale neighbors; a complimentary car to take guests shopping, overnight shoe shine.  - Travel & Leisure, March 2003
