An exquisite and rare find in the Paris most desirable neighborhood, a 17th century
private carriage house on Rue de lUniversite, one block from Blvd St Germain.
Lovingly restored over a period of two years with the permission of the Batiment de
France, as the Carriage House is officially listed as a historic building of Paris.
Some of the most famous sites of Paris are just a few minutes walk from your door. You are
just down the street from the Musee d'Orsay, a stroll across Pont Royal to the Louvre or a
walk along the Siene river to Notre Dame. The lively Boulevard St. Germain with its famous
cafes, gourmet specialty stores and irresistible designer boutiques is just a block away.
A fabulous central Left Bank location, this home is perfect for three couples, since each
of the bedrooms is very private. It is however, equally appropriate for a family.
From the moment you enter from the street, passing through the immense double doors of the
historic "hotel particulier" (or noble house) into an "allee" with a
barrel ceiling that takes you into the courtyard, you are transported back to 17th century
Paris. Elegantly furnished with the best of everything, 600 thread count sheets, sunken
candle light baths, real period antiques. Despite the valuable furnishings and
appointments, the Carriage House is not a museum, but rather a warm, family retreat in the
center of Paris.
Through small double doors you enter a foyer with a two story skylit vaulted ceiling and
original limestone block walls and old stone floors. To your right and down one step is a
separate suite with a large window onto the courtyard, double bed with antique headboard,
its own full marble bath with shower and a mini fridge. The room is upholstered in blue
and white toile de jouy and has an antique crystal chandelier. (NOTE: the bedding
in this room will be changed to either queen or king/twin by July 2006)
Up the stairs into the large foyer you look across the salon with its pyramid shaped
vaulted ceiling, large arched window on the courtyard and a huge 18th century linen fresco
covering one wall, through to the small library with its 17th century limestone fireplace.
Both rooms have stunning parquet de Versailles floors and are furnished with beautiful
period antiques. The library ceiling has a huge skylight, making it bright, even on rainy
days. Well equipped with a stereo CD player and a flat screen TV with DVD player tucked
into an antique armoire. There is an assortment of books, movies and board games for all
ages.
A separate hallway leading from each end of the salon brings you to the two master suites
on this floor. The romantic suite on the left hall has a 17th century limestone fireplace
and beamed ceiling. The fabrics are historic linen reproductions of period designs, and
the room is elegantly furnished. There is a queen bed with antique headboard Louis XV
antiques and historic maps of old French colonies. The en-suite bath has a sunken tub,
vanity with twin sinks and a separate stall shower.
The lovely suite down the right hallway is upholstered in a dark rose-colored toile de
jouy and has a king size bed that may be made up as two twins. There is an antique dresser
and an armoire for storage. The ceiling is vaulted and has a skylight so that on a clear
night you can lie in bed and see the stars. The en-suite bath has a sunken tub with
handheld shower, a built in washer/dryer and a vaulted skylit ceiling.
As a place to prepare a feast, or just to gather for morning croissants and cafe, the true
heart of the house is its grand old country style cuisine with stone floors and counters,
a farmhouse sink, and a wonderful, large "cornue" with multiple burners, a grill
and double ovens. Fit for a chef, the kitchen is equipped with a large collection of
antique copper pots, relined for current use, a dishwasher, coffee maker, toaster oven,
two sets of historic French Gien dishes and enough formal glassware for a small party. The
seating is at a large 17th century refractory table and there is a beautiful period four
door cupboard for storage.
The most incredible architectural detail of this wonderful home is the cuisine's original
"etoile" or star shaped vaulted beamed ceiling from 1667. Built by noted master
craftsman Pierre Sinson it is an exquisite example of 17th century joinery and for history
buffs, truly a marvel to see.
If that were not enough, both the kitchen and the two upper bedroom suites open onto a
lovely private walled 6x9 terrace with an antique wrought iron table and
chairs for al fresco dining in good weather.
Staff: Weekly maid service included, extra service is available. Cook available.
