Villa Poggiano (Montepulciano)
Central Tuscany, Chianti, and Siena, Italy
Villa Poggiano nestles amid 6 hectares of parkland, on a crest above the gentle hills of Val d’Orcia, just 2 kilometers from Montepulciano overlooking acres of Tuscan hills filled with vineyards. After long and meticulous reconstruction work, the present owners have at last restored the 18th century Villa to its original splendor. Guests to the Villa will find a refined and exclusive environment, nevertheless characterized by the sort of warm welcome that only a family-run establishment can offer.
Villa Poggiano is perfectly situated for day trips to the great cities of art (Siena, Florence, Perugia, Assisi and Rome), as well as for visiting the smaller nearby towns of Montepulciano, Pienza, Monticchiello, Montalcino and Cortona, places well-known the world over. It is 1 1/2 miles to Montepulciano; 1 1/2 hours North of Rome and 1 hour South of Florence. The Val d'Orcia area is a UNESCO world heritage site.
The suites and rooms are elegantly furnished with antique furniture, paintings and fittings, while the spacious marble bathrooms are fitted with showers or bathtubs. All are furnished in the same style as the Villa with antique furniture and paintings, creating an elegant yet warm and welcoming environment. The Villa has 3 rooms and 6 suites, each one different from the others. The rooms and suites all have large windows. All suites and rooms include satellite TV, strongbox, mini-bar, direct access to Internet and an external telephone line.
Those situated in the Villa itself overlook the Italian garden and the splendid marble swimming pool while those in the lodges located in the grounds of the Villa enjoy a magnificent view of the endless cornfields, vineyards and olive groves of Val D’Orcia. The Villa boasts a magnificent marble swimming pool decorated with statues and fountains, built at the beginning of the1900s. Villa Poggiano is the ideal place for those in search of an exclusive location, peaceful and discreet, as well as a family welcome.
The Villa and the adjacent buildings were built as a summer residence in the 18th century by the aristocratic Poliziana Gagnoni family. The main body of the Villa was successively restructured, before becoming the building as we know it today. The most recent of the rebuilding work was carried out in the mid 1900s when the Signorini family sold the property to the Helmke family, of German origin. The magnificent outdoor facilities such as the swimming pool, the statues and fountains, as well as some interior embellishments, were added in about 1940. The neo-classical style popular at the time is particularly apparent in the statues decorating the swimming pool, which were clearly inspired by the statues of the Stadio dei Marmi in Rome, designed by the architect Enrico del Debbio between 1927 and 1932. The Helmke family sold the property in the 1950s. Subsequently the Villa changed hands several times before finally being acquired by the Savini family in 2000, who, after long and meticulous reconstruction work at last restored the Villa to its former splendor and made it the charming inn it is today.
