Château Eza

Nice and the French Riviera, France

Built during the height of the Baroque movement, 400 years ago, Chateau Eza was constructed in the 9th-century village of Eze along the captivating cliff side of the French coast. On a summer boat trip through the Mediterranean with his father, King Gustaf of Sweden, Prince William of Sweden and Norway was mesmerized by the spectacular greatness mounted right outside of Nice. Having been inspired by the grand beauty, The Prince did not hesitate to purchase the cluster of stately homes standing gracefully among the Middle Ages village that comprise Chateau Eza today. This chateau of stone at the end of a winding cobblestone street was known as “The Prince of Sweden’s Castle” until 1976.

A passionate enthusiast for French art and culture, Prince William left his royal duties and found asylum at Chateau Eza to pursue his love for writing. The highly undisturbed village of Eze invited a serene and tranquil atmosphere which proved to inspire many of his publications. His quiet repose was only disrupted by the news of the death of his lover that required him to leave Eze and sail back to Sweden in 1953.
After the permanent departure of Prince William in the mid-20th century, The Prince of Sweden’s Castle was divided up into apartments until Andre Rochat, a wealthy diplomat from Genes and delegate of the International Red Cross, recognized the historic value of the enchanting treasure and purchased every lot by 1980. The eager owner oversaw extensive renovations to restore Chateau Eza to the same distinguished standard where Prince William’s art flourished . The increase in interest for the hotel inspired Rochat to add on a grandiose tearoom, which later became the highly-acclaimed dining room of the Michelin-starred French restaurant of Chateau Eza today.
