La Casa Del Limonero
Seville, Spain
In the heart of Seville's historic center, the Hotel Casa del Limonero stands as a living testament to the city's rich architectural and social evolution. This majestic building, now a luxury hotel, has witnessed centuries of history, from its Roman roots to its most recent renovations.
The palatial house is located in the original heart of ancient Hispalis, on land enclosed by the late Republican Roman wall. Archaeological excavations carried out on the adjacent plot and within the building have revealed remains of Roman paving, linking the site to the aristocratic domus of Seville during the High Imperial period. These findings highlight the building's connection to the city's millennia-long history.
During the Late Middle Ages, in the 15th century, the building acquired Mudéjar features that are still preserved. Among the most outstanding elements are a polychrome coffered ceiling with beams and joists, as well as the exceptional Valencian and Sevillian tile pavement known as "almatraya," a unique work that combines Gothic and Nasrid motifs. This pavement, restored and currently displayed in the hotel lobby, testifies to the wealth and sophistication of its former owners. At this time, the house was part of the Infante Alfonso de Molina neighborhood and was the residence of the influential Marmolejo family of Jewish converts, whose members held high ecclesiastical positions in 15th-century Seville.
With the arrival of the Renaissance in the 16th century, the palace underwent a major renovation that included the addition of a marble façade dated 1560, a symbol of prestige and power. This type of intervention was common in Seville, as demonstrated by contemporary examples such as the Casa de Pilatos and the Casa de los Pinelo. The galleries and interior courtyards were also reconfigured following a classical design inspired by the Italianate ideas of the period.
In the 19th century, the building passed into the hands of the Marquis of Urbina, who added decorative moldings, renovated the roofs, and refined the interior spaces. Later, in the 20th century, the Marquis of Las Torres, its last illustrious resident, lived in the house before the building was repurposed.
The current structure preserves an exceptionally complete architectural sequence: gatehouse, carriage entrance, vestibule, main courtyard with galleries on two levels, main hall, loggia or gazebo, and a large interior garden. The latter, organized on two levels and set apart from the main rooms, evokes the Roman design concept that connects the Hispano-Arabic domestic tradition with the cloistered convents of Seville. Today, the Hotel Casa del Limonero offers a unique experience, allowing its guests to enjoy exclusivity and comfort while immersing themselves in the living history of Seville. Echoes of its domestic past linger in every corner of the building, where tradition and modernity coexist in perfect harmony.
A year to find love at first sight in Seville. To discover that garden, its wild lemon trees, the orange trees, and the juice of their fruit that will delight you every season
Two years, two!, to design the project. To rebuild what was there but with respect, to restore a historic building in Seville without foundations and at the same time modernize it. To preserve its defining characteristic: thousands of tiles from different eras… To create 16 spacious bathrooms, a charming and relaxing hammam, a kitchen to welcome our guests, the heart of the house and available when the entire hotel is booked.
A hotel with a pool in Seville? Yes! By reducing the original pool by half and respecting the water scarcity. The color scheme of our hotel: so many railings, so many lampposts to restore and paint… why always black? In the color palette, RAL 5004 is a beautiful midnight blue that you will find in the marble plaque on the facade, in the iron elements, in the original ceiling lamps, even in the kimonos (yucatas) in your room!
Each of the 14 rooms are unique but all have air conditioning, underfloor heating, Wi-Fi, international television, telephone, minibar, Nespresso coffee machine, kettle, kimonos, slippers and L'Occitane toiletries. Smoking is not allowed in the rooms , only outdoors in the common areas.
